Message from Search Consultant John Hicks to Members of the Presidential Search Advisory Committee on Reviewing Materials Submitted by Applicants

November 20, 2009

Dear Florida State University Search Advisory Committee Members:

As we continue our search for the next President of Florida State University,
I know we are all looking forward to this point where we review candidate files.  I hope to offer a process for your use that will be as streamlined as possible.

Our most useful tool will be a dedicated website for your convenience in reviewing candidate materials and staying abreast of the latest information.  Additionally, there are a few strategies to consider as you look at CVs and begin evaluating the pool.

You will receive along with this email the web instructions and the access information (username and password) for your access to the search website which includes:

  • Candidate nomination/application materials
  • Links to position advertisement

The site will be updated regularly as new candidates are added from now until we meet.  You will be notified via email when additions are posted.    It is important that you not place significance on the date an applicant submits, as the timing can result from factors totally unrelated to their interest in the position.

It is a good rule of thumb to begin your evaluation of each candidate’s materials by initially reviewing the advertisement to refresh yourself on how the individual responded to the position description.  Then, first look at the CV, next the cover letter, and, last, any other furnished materials.  Our goal will be to build a solid list of individuals with the education, experience, integrity, and vision that you have identified in your initial discussions as a committee.  We should expect to see candidates with a variety of strengths, and those will form the basis for detailed discussions as a group.

As you review the posted materials on the website, please group all candidates in the following categories:

  • “Yes” Group:  I want to know more about this person and believe he/she may be a strong candidate.
  •  “Maybe” Group:  Might be worth considering later, but not strong enough for my “yes” list.
  •  “No” Group:  I do not believe this is a strong candidate, and I am not inclined to consider him/her further.

Enjoy becoming acquainted with some very interesting people who have demonstrated many impressive achievements.  I look forward to seeing you soon.

Best wishes and happy reading,

John

Presidential Search Advisory Committee Schedule Update

November 19, 2009

The Florida State University presidential search schedule has now been finalized, and the following information has been provided to the Presidential Search Advisory Committee (PSAC).

By design, this is now an expedited schedule because of the current national atmosphere created by numerous concurrent searches for university presidents and by other factors affecting the very open and public nature of this search in which some top candidates would be expected to apply toward the end of the search process. The search will remain open until a candidate is selected.

The search must move forward in a timely manner while top candidates are available.  Expedited schedules have been successful in Florida and elsewhere in similar searches and under similar circumstances.

Tuesday, November 24: PSAC members begin individual review of candidate files posted at the Academic Search, Inc., web site. These files will also be accessible to the public.

Tuesday, December 1, 2 p.m.: PSAC meets at the Florida State Alumni Center Grand Ballroom, 1030 West Tennessee Street, Tallahassee, to review applications and identify and invite candidates for on-campus interviews.

Wednesday-Friday, December 2-4: PSAC conducts interviews on campus in Tallahassee (schedule, locations TBA) with selected candidates. Constituency groups also have opportunities to interview candidates (schedule, locations TBA).

The PSAC will meet after the conclusion of the final interview to prepare their comments on candidates for forwarding to the Board of Trustees.
