"Issues in Education" Television Program

Issues in Education logo"Issues in Education," Florida State University President T.K. Wetherell's television program, airs the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. (EST) on WFSU-TV in Tallahassee and 6 p.m. (CST) on WFSG-TV in Panama City.

The program features a wide-ranging discussion of topics, including the challenges faced by public and private universities. The 30-minute program, co-hosted by Suzanne Smith of WFSU-TV and FSU-4, provides a platform for Wetherell to discuss critical issues in education with experts in education and related fields.

FSU History and Preservation
FSU President T.K. Wetherell talks with Dr. Robin Sellers, Director of the Reichelt Program for Oral history at FSU and author of the book Femina Perfecta which chronicles the university’s history up to 1947. Among the topics discussed are FSU’s effort to preserve history through oral history recordings, the Legacy Walk project, and the Heritage Protocol project. President Wetherell also discusses a new exhibit on the Seminole Tribe of Florida, a new math grant received by FSU and the upcoming fall commencement ceremony.

Science Education
FSU President T.K. Wetherell talks with Dr. Gregory Boebinger (director of FSU’s National High Magnetic Field Laboratory) and Dr. Sherry Southerland (associate professor in FSU’s Department of Middle and Secondary Education) about new developments and research in science and in science education. Among the topics discussed is FSU’s impact on science and science education. President Wetherell also discusses the new interim athletic director and the new President’s House.

FSU President T.K. Wetherell talks one-on-one with co-host Suzanne Smith about his first five years as leader of FSU. Among the items discussed: the battle over who controls the money for Florida’s education system, a plan to increase tuition in Spring 2008, the current state of the university and the status of the Pathways of Excellence project. Also discussed were his plans for the university’s future.

Among the items discussed: the transition from high school to college, relationships between K-12 programs and universities, and mentoring programs. President Wetherell also discusses recent budget challenges, the upcoming State of the University address and recent school rankings.

FSU Track and Field
FSU President T.K. Wetherell talks with FSU Track Coach Bob Braham and FSU senior Greg Bolden about the team winning their second national championship in as many years. Among the items discussed: the life of a student-athlete, upcoming challenges of training for the 2008 Olympics during the next FSU track season, and recruiting issues. President Wetherell also discusses the potential tuition increase of 5% in the Spring of 2008.

Fellowships
The President of Florida State University, T.K. Wetherell, talks with Director of FSU's Office of National Fellowships Jamie Purcell,  as well as one of FSU's 2007-2008 Fulbright winners, graduate student Nathan Timpano.  Included in the discussion is how FSU has managed to get 10 students to win Fulbrights this year, advice for students hoping to achieve similar recognition, and how the Office of National Fellowships works. President Wetherell also discusses how FSU will handle budget issues in the fall.

Orientation
The President of Florida State University, T.K. Wetherell, talks with Patrick Heaton, Director of FSU's Orientation Program, and a family facing the issue of their child leaving the nest and entering college.  Freshman Peyton Capps and her mother, Carla, talk about the challenges, the expectations and situations they've already been through as Peyton gets ready to start classes. All discuss the campus programs available to help them through the process. President Wetherell also discusses the current status of the potential 5% tuition increase.

Campus Security
President of Florida State University T.K. Wetherell talks with FSU Chief David Perry about Campus Security in the wake of the Virginia Tech shootings. In addition to examining safety matters already in place, the discussion includes plans to improve communication systems on campus. Among the topics, a siren/speaker system that will be installed this month and the instant text message system that is expected to be in place before the fall semester. The President also discusses the new tuition structure put together by the state legislature and the benefits it would provide to the University.

Joe O'Shea, New SGA President
The President of Florida State University talks with the new Student Government Association President, Joe O'Shea. O'Shea's extraordinary work in and out of the classroom had USA Today naming him to their All-USA College Academic First Team. Not only does O'Shea have a 4.0 and plans to attend Law School, but he's started two free clinics while in school at FSU. One is a dental clinic in Tallahassee and the other is a Health clinic in Katrina-ravaged New Orleans. The discussion centers around O'Shea's plans for his upcoming term in office, community service among college students, and the inspiration for the projects O'Shea has focused on in his life. President Wetherell also discusses the importance of Student Government, the ongoing Legislative session, and the 2007 FSU Relay For Life.

Senator Al Lawson, 2007 Legislative Session
FSU alumnus and Senator Al Lawson joins President T.K. Wetherell to discuss the upcoming 2007 Florida legislative session. The discussion centers around what higher education institutions in Florida can expect from the budget debates. Among the topics discussed during the show: potential tuition hikes, technology fees, and the relationship between FSU and the new Governor. President Wetherell also discusses other issues related to FSU including the decision to place a new Math and Science Research center at FSU and the President's efforts to bring the Sustainable Energy Science and Engineering Center to Florida State.

Seven Days of Opening Nights
President Wetherell previews the 2007 Fine and Performing Arts Festival: Seven Days of Opening Nights with Professor Patty Phillips, Interim Co-Chair of the FSU Dance Department and Dr. Leo Welch with FSU's College of Music. They also discuss the importance of Arts Education at the College level and the issues regarding funding this type of education. President Wetherell also discusses other issues related to FSU including a recent ranking that places the University in the top 10 graduate schools for scholarly output. Other topics include the new 20.5 million dollar classroom building and future construction projects on campus.

International Programs
The President of Florida State University talks about International Education. In the 18th century, only students from wealthy families could afford a "grand tour" of Europe. Today, public Universities are incorporating International education into their curriculums. President Wetherell talks with FSU International Program director Jim Pitts about how Florida State has been one of the Universities paving that path. 2007 marks the 50th anniversary of FSU's International Program which now reaches 20 locations in Europe, Asia and Central America. The President also discusses his resolutions for the New Year and the upcoming Legislative Session.
