"Issues in Education" Television Program
"Issues in Education," a public affairs program hosted by the president of The Florida State University, airs the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. on WFSU-TV in Tallahassee and 6:30 p.m. on WFSG-TV in Panama City. An encore presentation is aired the Sunday following the premiere on WFSU-TV at 10:00 a.m., WFSG-TV at 9:00 a.m.
The program also airs throughout the month on 4fsu (Comcast Channel 4 in Leon, Gadsden, and Wakulla counties) on Wednesdays at 10:00 p.m., Fridays at 6:00 p.m., and Sundays at 7:00 p.m.
The program features a wide-ranging discussion of topics, including the challenges faced by public and private universities. The 30-minute program, co-hosted by Suzanne Smith of WFSU-TV and FSU-4, provides a platform for President Barron to discuss critical issues in education with experts in education and related fields.

Osher Lifelong Learning InstituteIn this episode of Issues in Education we explore learning as a lifelong skill. Baby boomers are saying college towns like Tallahassee are a great place to retire partly because of the educational opportunities available to them. The Florida State University President and WFSU-TV'S Suzanne Smith look at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute on FSU's campus. They talk with OLLI past president Susan Yelton and OLLI member Wade Birch about the classes and activities available to community members over the age of 50. Tallahassee was recently listed as the top destination for baby boomers looking for a place to retire. Dr. Barron also talks about the recent 50th Anniversary of Integration at FSU and the events conducted to honor that time in the University's history. |

Guests include Doby Flowers, FSU's first African American homecoming queen; FSU vice president for University Relations, Liz Maryanski; and current president of FSU's Black Student Union, Kiaira McCoy. In addition to talking about the early years of the transition, the group also talks about the upcoming events that culminate with celebrated poet Maya Angelou. With guests Dr. Gregory Boebinger (director of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory), Dr. James Brooks (a professor of physics at FSU) and doctoral candidate Michael Greenleaf, they look at some of the fascinating and useful research that could affect your cars, computers and health care. Among the topics: energy storage and the study of tumors. Dr. Barron also talks about how materials science research ties into future plans for FSU. |

Seven Days of Opening Nights FestivalWith the recent push to increase the number of STEM degrees (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) at universities around the state and across the country, Arts Education is often left out of the equation.
