A Future We Would Welcome - How We Measure Up
An Update on the Recommendations of Florida State University’s
Commissions on the Future

VII. Increase private-sector partnerships Recommendation VII
Since the Commission report first came out, FSU has continually increased our efforts and continues to forge strong relationships with state and federal governments, organizations and industry on issues of mutual interest.
For instance, FSU and the U.S. Navy have teamed up with private corporations to research and develop the next-generation all-electric ship.  Admiral Cohen, who directs the Office of Naval Research, has told me that this project may well be more significant than our Mag Lab.
The university also has joined forces with the University of West Florida on project to assist the Chief of Naval Education and Training in a mission to educate sailors.
FSU is a member of a team of research institutions selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to operate Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The team’s goals include strengthening the nation’s leadership in key areas of science national defense, among others.
We expect that collaborative research between FSU, the University of Florida and the University of Miami will lead to better dissemination of climate information to farmers and better decision-making in the agricultural industry.

FSU’s Office of Research, an office that works as a catalyst for partnering opportunities, is hiring personnel to focus specifically on finding new relationships with external entities.  These new positions will help FSU to create the kind of relationships that will make our research better utilized and our researchers better known nationally.
Finally, the Commissions told us that, to reach our goal, we must:
