An Update on the Recommendations of Florida State University’s
Commissions on the Future

  III. Improve access to Florida State University through undergraduate and graduate stipends and fellowships and other methods. Recommendation III
    Accessibility for students with a wide range of backgrounds is a continuing goal of Florida State. At the undergraduate level, we review applications carefully to identify students who may be the first in their family to attend college. We look for other indicators to assure that qualified students who may not have had other opportunities and role models have the opportunity to attend FSU. We are pleased with the increasing diversity on this campus, which reflects the diversity of Florida’s population.

    In looking at the recruitment of African-Americans, since 1994 we have increased their numbers by 44.2%, and the number of Hispanics has increased by 55.1% in that time.
    Since this recommendation was made, we have seen a large impact from the application of the Bright Futures Program. Indeed, only a small number of our students who are Florida citizens actually pay tuition. This year alone, 88% of Florida freshmen used a Bright Futures scholarship to pay all or most of their tuition.
    At the graduate level, the number and level of university scholarships has been increased. University Fellowships have been at $10,000 for the last four years. This year, Fall 2000, they were increased to $15,000 and five of this group has been designated as Presidential Fellows, and these received an additional $5000, to $20,000 in 2000.
    Additional funds have been provided through differential funding by the state to enhance the number of stipends and fee waivers for graduate students throughout the university.
    Private giving has heightened the amount and number of stipends available for graduate study and dissertation research. Faculty are providing increased external research funds to support students and federal funding for dissertation research is being applied for and obtained on a regular basis.
    Private giving is a critical element of building quality at Florida State. The Commissions’ recommended that we:
